I noticed a trend in myself and many others to become
cynical and sarcastic of late due to decisions made at individual, local, state
and national levels which, to be kind, seem to lack foresight and not benefit
the community at large. I realize, of course, that all humans have their
moments of short-sightedness and (dare I say) stupidity, so expecting that
to change would be naïve. So what alarms me is not so much stupidity, but the
global perspective of hopelessness it can create!
We create our future in the here and now with our attitudes. So what I want to suggest is an attitude that can empower us individually and, by osmosis, globally. I’m not looking for fame, but I feel strongly enough about it to speak out and perhaps even create a campaign. It’s a simple concept and, fortunately, doesn’t get bogged down with religious and political bias.
It’s simply this: “Envision a bright future.” Some might say
I’m fighting human nature, but my position is that I’m counting on it. Humans
can and do learn, at least eventually, and at best quickly, if given
convincing feedback. Ah, there’s the rub… convincing feedback.
What does it take to convince someone that envisioning a
bright future is powerful and worth the effort of ignoring ubiquitous evidence
to the contrary? The reality is that there’s just as much evidence that people do
learn and evolve, but it doesn’t get as much press as peoples’ mistakes.
But looking at the bigger picture, mistakes are part of the learning
process. We have evolved in many ways.
There are lots of good things happening. We just have to realize
it and, on an individual level, trust in, and even promote a bright future.
Of course one could say this is just “The Power of Positive
Thinking” rehashed, and perhaps it is. But it’s a well-known fact that
sometimes saying the same thing in a slightly different way will “turn on the
light” and create an “Aha!” moment.
If you expect a bright future, you’ll move forward with
confidence and can do great things. If you’re Mr. or Ms. “Gloom and Doom”
you’re more likely to be a couch potato. That’s the simple difference.
I guess the bumper sticker would be:
Envision a Bright Future – We learn!
There you have it.
The ball’s in your court.
